Hypothes.is: social annotation

Time estimate: 45mins. (mainly to read the syllabus!)

Hypothes.is is a small extension you add to your Google Chrome browser. It helps you to annotate the web, PDFs, and each other’s websites, and to comment on each other’s annotations. In other words: it is social. You can ask questions, give answers, and add links, images, and videos to help to come to a deeper understanding of the course materials.

In this task you will set up an account on Hypothes.is (or reactivate it), join the Hypothes.is group for our course, and annotate the course syllabus on the website.

The golden rule of learning new digital skills applies. If you can’t get it to work at all after 15-20 mins: don’t panic, and reach out to the Digital Learning Assistants. They can help you set this up.

Set up a hypothes.is account

  • NOTE: Chrome web browser works best for Hypothes.is. These instructions assume you use Chrome.
  • Follow the instructions in this video from IT/DL
    • You can use an alias to sign up.
    • Go to web.hypothes.is to sign up for your account.
  • Install the Chrome extension for hypothes.is

If you already used Hypothes.is in the past, you can re-use/activate that account.

Join the group for your course

  • Join the group for your course: HST137 (People and their stuff), HST267 (Trad. Japan) or HST271 (Mod. China)
  • If you have trouble joining the group, ask the Digital Learning Assistants

Annotate the syllabus

  • Go to the syllabus webpage: HST137 (People and their stuff), HST267 (Intro to Traditional Japan), or HST271 (Modern China)
  • Activate the Hypothes.is extension in the menubar of the Chrome browser, make sure you are logged in, and select the group with the course number (you just joined it) from the drop-down menu in the extension. Useful help guide from ID/DL
  • Annotate the syllabus with your questions and comments.
    • Use annotations, or respond to others’ comments (e.g. if you know the answer)
    • Top tip: use tags: add question (when you have a question), answer (when you have an answer), suggestion (when you have a suggestion); add new tags: be creative!
    • You can use text, images, (GIFs? Let’s try it!), and embed YouTube links or insert hyperlinks.
    • If you do not have comments, please acknowledge you read through the syllabus and understand its contents, using a page note.
      • Just click on “Page Note” at the top of the Extension window, and click on the little page icon (left side of the window, under the eye)
  • Don’t forget to click the Post button, and make sure it posts to our Group, not to Public!
  • Video on how to add an annotation Hypothes.is, from IT/DL
  • If you don’t succeed at first: try and try again! Adopt the Growth Mindset from the cats in the sidebar. Check the Help section, experiment, explore. After 15-20mins of frustration, reach out to the DLA team!
